Old School Flite

Do you have a beginner golfer on your holiday shopping list this year? The Top Flite XL 5000 Box Full Set is the perfect gift for him or her. Make their day by giving them this quality set of clubs to jump start their game.

I was hooked on golfing but still paying for rental clubs when I decided to bite the bullet and get myself a set of clubs. After some research I bought the Top Flite XL 5000 and I've never been disappointed.

The Top Flite set has 18 pieces (more than other sets), which meant that I didn't have to run out and buy a few more pieces right off the bat. The set includes a 5-wood and a sand wedge. This alone makes the set a great buy.

The driver is forged with a graphite Synchro-flex shaft and a draw-biased weight screw. I found that this driver allowed for more club speed, power, and distance ability. The putter has a mallet design with a CNC milled soft face. Since putting is not my strong suit, this putter gave me a little softer touch on the green.

The Top Flite XL 5000 Box Full Set comes in a great professional looking carrying bag. The bag is a fashionable black, red, and silver with tons of storage space, a durable stand, head covers, and a rain hood. The clubs have a diamond plate design that makes them look more expensive than they really are.

This set of clubs looks so professional that I felt like a better golfer than I actually was at that time. I was hitting the course in style with clubs that felt great.

The Top Flite XL 5000 Box Full Set is the perfect gift for any beginner golfer. Save on rental fees and surprise them with their own set.

full review of forever famous callaway x-22 irons

Full Review: Callaway X-22 Irons

Callaway X22 irons are some of the best golf clubs that amateurs and professional golfers can play. The Callaway X22 irons come a long tradition of Callaway irons in the X series. They have ever been some of the best golf irons.~Callaway Golf's line of X-series irons have always been ludicrously easy to use. I think back my first round using a set of Callaway's earliest X-12s a decade ago and having grown up using blades, the switch to something that actually aided me get the ball in the air, was a honest revelation.

We're starting to see more and more "Game Improvement " clubs make their way into the hands of tour players. Two companies for the most part (Mizuno because of their feel and accuracy) , and lately--Callaway, for their forgiveness without playing clunky or losing overall distance. It's nice to see that some of the clubs that are being peddled to us, are actually as good as the makers claim they are. This particular set of Callaways is the weapon of choice of none other than Rocco Mediate--that same Rocco who battled his way to an 18 hole playoff, and then a sudden death playoff at last year's 2008 US Open with none other than Tiger Woods.

A good friend of mine has a son in law who is a Callaway Rep, and he actually dared me to try these. He knows full well that I have been known to write unkind things about Callaway in the past, but these clubs are a brilliant example of the amazing turnaround in quality control that has brought Callaway back to the forefront of both technological advancement and craftsman like workmanship. The Ben Hogan Division of their Top Flite Acquisition is still paying tremendous dividends. The last time I was this impressed with Callaway Irons was way back in the days of the Hawkeye Titanium VFT series. Those were well ahead of their time, and very well crafted. These, though not quite as cutting edge, are exceptionally well crafted, and extremely well thought out.

BUILD QUALITY

These have the old school build quality that once made Callaway --"The Club to Own." They took a lot of cues from their tour staff, and thinned out the top line, as well as the sole. This club is every bit as forgiving as some of those super clunkers that bare more resemblance to an old '54 Hudson Terraplane than they do a golf club. On top of that the balance remains top notch despite the rather hefty, but well planned and placed heel and toe weight plugs. These weight plugs are used to frame the extreme weight notching. This helps lower the center of gravity and increase MOI to almost frightening levels. All the while the club looks handsome and feels solid at address. Though it is a shade light for my personal taste it still feels like a well oiled and finely balanced machine throughout the swing. All the lines are clean, and even the grips have been double checked to be perfectly square with the clubface. There are no loose ends or glue droppings to be found. Better still, there is a consistentcy of shaft flex throughout the set. That used to be my biggest gripe w/Callaway and their once obvious  "lowest bidder wins the OEM shaft contract" approach.

OVERALL FEEL

As I said, they are a tad light for my personal taste, but that may just have been the Graphite Shafts. 3-9I  sport a D0 swing weight, which creeps up to a D1 in the Pitching and Attack/Gap Wedge. The Sand Wedge and Lob Wedge jump to a D3. The steel shafts are a little more even with the weight distribution, and I might have been a bit more impressed with them, as the vast majority of them play at my preferred D2 Swing Weight. Still, the graphites were impressive, and conduct enough information to allow me to work the ball with confidence, That's quite an achievement as compared to most "Game Improvement Clubs."  These are way ahead of most manufacturer's offerings.

THE SET

The long irons in this set are fairly long, but I'd still prefer a hybrid or two in the low end. I'll grant you that these are easy to hit for long irons, and if you're already a long hitter you won't miss the hybrids as much as I do. There are definitely some long irons that are longer, and some that feel better, but these are the easiest I've hit in some time. They're strong enough for the stinger shot, and they're easy enough to act as a tee box alternative for those who do not trust their driver.

The mid irons in this set are pretty flexible. They are fairly long, but the real payoff is once again in their ease of use. You can work the ball left and or right with this one. That makes them dependable pin seekers from long distance, as well as great set up and approach clubs. I felt comfortable in thinking of these as transition clubs  from hybrids and/or metals to the short irons. The feel at impact, though not as exacting as say a forged blade, is informative enough to allow you to make on course adjustments to your swing du jour, working of the ball, etc..

The short irons and wedges are definitely laser like. All the clubs in this set have a huge "safe hitting zone"  as well as a respectable sweetspot. Callaway practically invented variable face thickness technology, and this set is a wonderful example. You'll get a lot of "POP" off the face of any club in this set. Their trademark shorter hosel also allows for more perimeter weighting for forgiveness, as well as less hosel to get snagged by the rough and twist the club head open. But the wedges provide one of my mine gripes with this set of clubs, and the one that cost them a full star.

It seems that if you are left handed you're out of luck as far as a gap wedge goes. Seeing as there's a full 11* of loft between the 45* Pitching Wedge and the 56* Sand Wedge that's just too much of a "GAP". Rocco does not play the wedges in this set and only plays the 3I-9I. Dissing "Lefties" is also very wrong when Callaway flaunts "Lefty--aka Phil Mickelson" as their big Tour Staff Player. Lefties are also out of luck in the Lob Wedge department as well. Now if "Philly The Flop" is your mascot, and you don't even make a left handed Lob Wedge---you've got problems. Fortunatley I'm a converted lefty, and this doesn't effect me personally.  Unfortunately for Callaway, I am still left handed, and many of my golfing buddies haven't converted. Therefor, I am forced to dock them at least a star for this one. A really unforgiveable oversight if you're going to juice the lofts of a set.
