Cyling pedals?
I don't know what kind of pedals I have on my mongoose shimano sora road bike. They are triangular with raised edges, right now they have a plastic toe holder and strap to hold your foot in. However it looks like you can take it off and use the pedal with a pair of cycling shoes...but I don't know. Does anyone know if the triangular pedal with raised sides is a type of pedal I can use with cleats? And if so what is it called?

You haven't mentioned how old your road bike is ... the last Mongoose road bikes with Shimano Sora drivetrains was back in 2004.
The "off the shelf" pedals for these bikes was a standard alloy or steel platform with both toe clips and straps.
That being said, if your pedals look like the image in the first link, you have what is now a relative rarity! The correct cleats for THESE pedals are PD 64s (made by Shimano). They're awfully hard to find, and extremely expensive. The pedal itself was designed to be more aerodynamic, primarily for triathlon and track racing.
