Yes, there is such a thing called a Bianchi Bike. It has style, grace, and versatility. It's also a favorite among the fixed gear bike community.

A little about Bianchi Bikes

Formed by Edoardo Bianchi in Milan, Italy, Bianchi Bikes was founded in 1885 (that's old!). In the same year, the company pioneered the equi-sized wheel use with pneumatic rubber tires (not to mention the front wheel caliper-operated braking mechanism as well). Known as one of the worlds oldest bicycle companies, Bianchi is known for race bikes, track bikes, leisure bikes, and even fixed gear bikes of the modern age.

Bianchi in the US

In the United States, Bianchi headquarters is located in Hayward, California. Today, Bianchi makes bikes in the following categories: Ducati Corse, Hors Categorie, Born For Performance, Coast 2 Coast, Dama Bianca, D2 Special, Classica, Road Steel, MTB Performance, MTB Leisure, Sport, and Cross-Terrain. Of course within each one of these categories lies a number of sleek, high-performance bikes ranging from multi-terrain to classic road bike styles. Also today, fixed gear fanatics like Bianchi bikes for their history, designs, and prestige (they also look great with Campagnolo parts).

The Taiwan Conspiracy

Known from originating in Italy, Bianchi bikes now split their production in Italy and Taiwan. Although some may say this has degraded the purity of Bianchi and the prestige as one of the truest road bikes, overseas production has undoubted helped keep costs down and allowed many to discover Bianchi for the first time at an affordable price. In the U.S., the majority of Bianchi bikes sold are made in Taiwan. Only the Reparto Corse category is still made in Italy.

Famous Riders

When it comes to champion riders, Bianchi has a few. From Jan Ullrich to Danilo Di Luca, Bianchi has won numerous Tour de France competitions as well as victories at Giro d'Italia. This bicycle company has a reputation for winning awards on the track and on the streets, so don't think you're getting a cheap-o bike here.

The Auto Connection

In the mid 1950s, Bianchi teamed up with Pirelli and Fiat to form Autobianchi. This short -lived auto manufacturer ceased production of vehicles in 1996. They produced vehicles such as the Bianchina Trasformabile, Stellina, and Primula (not to mention the A111 and A112). But enough about cars...back to bikes.

Traditional Bianchi Green

You may have heard of the traditional Bianchi Green. It's a turquoise color referred to as Celeste. The theories and stories surrounding this color range from it being the color of the Milan sky, the color of the Italian Queen's eyes (at the time), and even that it was a mixture of surplus military paint. Regardless of the reason, Bianchi Green is part of the tradition and recognizable by Bianchi fans the world around.

So, Do You Want a Bianchi?

If you're thinking about getting your first road/mountain bike, Bianchi is definitely a brand to check out. It's rich history and lasting brand power make it a bike worth the investment. Prices range and will vary from model to model and the accessories available, so be sure to shop around. For you fixed gear fans, older Bianchis can be picked up online from Craigslist and other online/offline second-hand outlets. If you're lucky, you might just find one at the local neighborhood garage sale.

A Bicycle’s Anatomy

A human-powered vehicle driven by pedals is also known as a bicycle or cycle for short. It has two wheels which are attached to a metal or in some cases hard plastic frame, one at the front and the other at the back.

The History Of The Bicycle

The first bicycle hit Europe in the 19th century. Presently their number is exceeding one billion throughout the world. They are used as a principal mode of transportation in some areas of the world, especially Netherlands and China. They have also developed as a very popular form of entertainment and recreation. Other fields of human activities that they have been adopted are adult fitness, children`s toys, police and military applications, cycle sports and courier services. Thus over the period of time the humble bicycle has assumed quite a few roles!

The common bicycle and its basic configuration and shape has been altered very slightly since the first model driven by chains was developed back in 1885. However, some subtle details have been made better with the growing use of computer and improvement in material technology. Using modern technologies have made it possible to produce specialized designs for different kinds and uses of cycling.

The Design and Components of a Typical Bicycle

The Wheels – they are the most important part of any vehicle. The initial wheels used a wooden hub with a steel axle, spokes made of wood and an iron tire which is fitted on the outside. The wheels used today have a metal hub, metallic wire spokes, a metal rim to hold the spokes and a pneumatic rubber tire on the outside. Another important part of the wheel are the bearings which allows free movement of the hub on the axle.

The Frame – almost all of the bicycles used today has the diamond frame. It`s made up of two triangles, the front and the rear. The front triangle has the top tube, head tube, seat tube and down tube. Head tube is the part containing the headset of bearing to allow smooth steering, the top tube connects to the seat, and the down tube connects the head tube and bottom bracket. The rear triangle has the seat tube, seat stays and paired chain stays.

The Drivetrain – is made up of the pedals, which rotates the crank arms, which in turn are attached to a sprocket or chain rings which drives the chain and makes the rear wheel rotate.

The Seating and Steering – to make it possible to steer the handlebars will have to be turned and the front wheel follows suit. For seating there are saddles on the top of the frame. The seating can be designed for comfort or to make cycling smoother and faster.

The Brakes - the brakes used in contemporary design of bicycles are either rim brakes that uses pads to compress the wheel from 2 sides and stopping it, internal hub brakes that has the pads inside the hubs or disc brakes. Braking in bicycles is hand-operated by pressing the brake levers installed on the handlebars on either side.

The Suspension - incorporates a system to make the cycling experience smoother.

The Accessories – miscellaneous parts like mudguards to avoid spray from puddles, chain guards to save clothes from oils, kick stands to keep the bicycle upright while parked have become permanent features of a bicycle. Other accessories like front baskets, rear racks, space for head lamp, a pump, helmets, tool kit etc are also available as per ordered.

The function and evolution of bicycles have affected mankind in a bigger way than it seems. It has affected history in both industrial and cultural realms. In the initial years, bicycles and its construction were dependent on the technology that existed; more recently, its technology in turn has given forth ideas in different areas.
