A good country song lyric is usually detailed, tells a story, and offers a unique way of looking at its subject. There are many different ways to approach writing such a lyric, and I will outline one here.
Start With A Good Hook
I like to use "plays on words" for hooks. They are popular throughout most types of music, and they're especially popular in country music. To come up with such a hook, think of common phrases in our culture, such as "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" or even a movie title such as "Star Wars." By changing a word here and there, you arrive at "a bottle a day keeps your memory away" and "Bar Wars" (a hit from the late 1970's).
Another approach to a good hook is to twist or deepen the meaning of a common saying or even a phrase you might hear in passing. Such real titles include "He Stopped Loving Her Today," "Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold," and "Make The World Go Away." This approach opens up hook choices even more, and there is no limit to what a creative songwriter can come up with. "Don't Blink" and "Water" testify to that.
Grab Them In The First Verse
Begin with concrete, sensory details that the listener can relate to. Use sights, sounds, smells, etc. to pull the audience into the song. You want the listener to either identify with the main character of the song or to be drawn in by the drama of what you're describing.
Rhymes can vary and sometimes not even be there at all. Most of the time you do want to rhyme, and the most common patterns include line one with line two, then line three with line four. There are no hard and fast rules here, however. After you write enough, you begin to feel your rhyming pattern as you develop the verse.
One key part of developing a good first verse is to make sure it flows into the chorus. You want to make that transition as seamless as possible, and the best advice I can give is to study the masters, Hank Williams (both senior and junior), Harlan Howard, Bob McDill, Craig Wiseman, etc.
Deepen The Story Or Emotion In The Second Verse
With an eye on sensory detail and an ear for keeping the rhyme scheme consistent in both verses, use the second verse to develop your basic story or emotion from the first verse. Again, studying great songs will aid you greatly in this. And again, you want the second verse to ramp up to the chorus.
Bridge Or No Bridge?
In older country music, there usually were no bridges, but in today's country music you find them used a lot. The basic idea here is to provide a slight twist or new angle to the hook you've been developing in the verses. A bridge is usually half the length of a verse and, of course, dovetails neatly once again back into the chorus.
This is how I have written a lot of country song lyrics, and it's a method that works well for me. If you like it, try it. If not, create your own way to write one. The main thing is to have fun doing it.
