No matter how well you maintain your mountain bike, a breakdown on the trail is inevitable if you ride regularly enough. You should be carrying with you a few essentials and have some basic knowledge to fix just about any mechanical failure you may experience. Following this advice could be the difference between a long walk home or a successful ride back.
Flat tires are the most common failure you will experience. You should be carrying with you an air pump, a tube repair kit, and some tire levers. If you have the room in your seat bag it is nice to carry a spare tube as well. These are basic items and you should know how to fix a regular flat tire. But what if the flat is due to a torn tire? Even after you fix or replace the tube, riding on it with a torn tire will only cause the tube to puncture again. There is one quick fix that can be used on the trail to protect the tube enough to get you back home. Use dollar bills to protect the tube at the area of the tire damage. You can either wrap a few bills around the tube or use several bills in between the tube and the tire. Inflate the tube to at least 40psi and check regularly the area of the damage on the way back.
Chain breaks are the second most common failures on the trail. You should be carrying a chain break tool and if needed any special pins for your chains brand. Note that Shimano chains require a special pin and a particular method for installation. In some cases the repair may cause you to lose several links that will reduce the number of gears you will have available due to the shortened chain.
Bent rims if not that severe can be brought back to true by adjusting the spokes with a spoke wrench. Most good bicycle multi-tools include various sized spoke wrenches. Badly bent rims will need a little more work. Remove the wheel from the bike and leave the tire mounted and inflated. Smack the rim onto flat ground to straighten out the damage. You will be surprised at how well this will work. Spokes also get damaged. If you encounter some broken spokes you will need to either remove them or twist them around an adjacent spoke to allow the wheel to turn freely. If too many spokes are damaged you may not be able to ride the bike safely.
Broken cables for the most part are a minor issue that will not keep you from making it back. For broken brake cables just make sure you ride slow and at downhill areas walk. For a broken front derailleur cable manually put the chain onto the middle chain ring and shift gears using the rear derailleur. For a broken rear derailleur cable and depending on the manufacturer, the chain will automatically go to either the largest or the smallest cog. If it is on the smallest you could probably ride back with no issues. If it is the largest you may need to adjust it if the trail is too tough. Adjust the limit screws on the derailleur to force the chain into a middle cog.
Rear derailleurs can break or shatter after being struck by rocks. If this happens the fix is to turn your bike into a single speed. Break the chain with a chain tool and remove it from routing through the rear derailleur. Adjust the length of the chain by removing several links so the chain will route around a middle cog and the middle chain ring only. Do not attempt to shift the front derailleur to another chain ring during the ride back.
A broken seat post can sometimes be repaired enough to get you back. Splint the post with a stick jammed inside both ends at the break and tape it up. You will need to ride carefully with this method or use the other option which is to remove the post and ride back standing up. A broken handle bar in most cases is too severe to allow for a safe ride back. You can try to splint it like the seat post method and then secure it in the stem clamp at the break and use a lot of care and slow speeds. This is still a little risky and depending on the trail back it may be wiser and safer to walk.
A final word of caution. Always use common sense and never ride a repaired bike in situations that are too dangerous, get off and walk in areas where a fall could lead to serious injury or worse. Take your time and don't rush yourself back.

They bought this product years ago. Rack is used in road and mountain bike frames are different shapes and sizes. Probably keeps bike without being destroyed. Bicycles will not move, when all forms are used. Well built, heavy units of service. Very little wear after years of use. Or hands and put the mast functions work well. Separate bike cradles are removable and adjustable for each frame, or the distance between the motor. Masthead or access to tailgate (Jeep Cherokee) without a problem. Even with the folding bike access hatch (not recommended, but will work.) Property Before Rhode Gear rack, which was good, but is certainly a very good product. Also bought a hitch lock PIN that works well. I would recommend this product.

This is definitely a quality product but it was not cheap either. Everything on it like the fold down arms, and the tiling down features worked very very well. My only problem with it was getting my daughter's 24" bikes thru the two arms and thru the mounting points. The mounting points are very good does an amazing job. The bike really don't swing. And the rug coating on the mounts does a great job of not damaging the bike's finish (unlike my prior bike rack).
I did not try to mount 5 bike on this rack, so I can't give an opinion as to how it works with 5 bikes. However, I did get 3 bikes on it and it looks like I could easily mount a 4th bike, but it will take some doing to get a 5th bike on it. So, for those who just have 3 to 4 bike to deal with, I recommend getting this 5-bike model because it will be easier for you to deal with.

Good rack
I've had this rack for about a month and taken it on a couple of long trips (200+ miles) and a number of trips around town. The rack's best attribute is that it holds the bikes very steady and secure at highway speeds. We ride quite a bit in the warmer months and the rack allows easy access to the back hatch when folded down, so it is possible to leave it on all the time which is convenient. It is fairly heavy, so getting it on and off the car is not easy. Standard road bike frames (diamond frames) go on and off with ease. Getting bicyles with non-standard frame geometries (very common for mountain bikes) on and off can be a challenge. You cannot fit 5 non-standard frames on there, but 3 fit fine.
It wasn't inexpensive after including hitch installation and purchasing a lock for it, but I'm very happy with the rack and I would give it a recommendation if you transport diamond frame bicycles and want a stable and secure rack.

Great for short distances, not great for highway use.
This was my first hitch mounted rack and was far superior to my trunk mounted rack. It is great for short trips to the bike store, the trail, across town, etc. . . The problem comes in when you get on the highway or go any long distance. The bikes will move on the rack from the wind and can rub against each other or worse work the straps loose. I went out of town for a mountain bike race and when I got there I found that my rear derailleur and hanger were both bent because my MTB had slid into my road bike which cost me a little over $100.00 to repair, not to mention scratched the paint on both bikes.

Good rack, 5 bikes is tight
I bought this after looking at the reviews on this site and elsewhere. I had a Bighorn 4-bike rack and loved it (except it didn't fold down) but needed to load 5 bikes. It is a very well-built rack. Despite folding in two places it is strudy and when tightened I noticed very little sway--no more than my Bighorn which was a solid unit. My only complaint is that 5 bikes is a challenge, at least if some of them are kids bikes. 5 adult bikes may work but it took a whole lot of trial and error to get it loaded with non-standard bikes. The arms are 28 inches (I measured in the store), and 31 inches inches would have made all the difference in the world. In retrospect I think I would have tried the Allen, which mounts the 5th bike between the column and the car, but I couldn't find arm length specs anywhere (I wonder why that is?) and the Yakima brand has proven reliability. As for now I'm going to shell out $29.99 for those cross-mount adapters--not somthing I wanted to do for a $275 rack.

Holds the bikes securely. Love the 3 points of attachment for the bikes. Just wish there was something included for the wheel. Works great for our adult bikes. Kid bikes don't fit but we knew that before we purchased it. We wanted room to grow! We've had it for a month & are very happy.
