Adjustment of Avid hydraulic disc brakes?
I have Avid Juicy 5 disc brakes on my bike. After taking the rear wheel off for transport of the bike, I have put it back on and discs are now always in contact with the rotor and the bike is pretty much unridable, as it feels that the brakes are always partially on. I guess this is as I must have accidentally pulled the brake lever whilst the wheel was off. I am now struggling to loosen the pads off, and I am unsure of how to do it without damaging them. Does anyone have any ideas how this could be done? Thanks.
If you did knock the brake lever while the wheel was off, the pads have likely repositioned themselves closer together. Get a flat head screwdriver or similar tool and, with the pads still in the calipers, gently push them back into their seat. This will set them as far apart as they will go. Put the wheel back on and pump the lever, which will reset the pads where you need them to be.
Avid actually produce some very clear, user-friendly manuals for their brakes. If you didn't get one with the brakes, then look it up online.
EDIT: I just looked in the box for the brakes, and they also came with a piece of red plastic shaped to fit between the pads for this purpose. Mine are sevens, but I'm sure fives would come with it too.
