You are driving your pride and joy through the parking lot on a Saturday and people are admiring your car as they should; you have just detailed the whole vehicle and it's looking its best. Then you step on the brakes, a couple of people look at you in disgust and the smaller children are covering their ears and whining to their parents as your low brake pad indication squealers are rubbing on the brake rotors. It's time for a brake job, and you don't let anyone touch your car so you are going to do it yourself. You have a couple of options. You could drive to the closest dealership and get OEM pads; this will typically cost you an arm and a leg. You could drive to the local auto parts place and save a bit of money on an aftermarket set of brake pads that will likely work just as well. Another option is buying from an online auto parts store.
The online format of business has several advantages, the first is location. The warehousing for an online car parts store does not need to be located in prime real estate. It does not have to be easily accessible to highly populated areas because it does not require the convenience of location to do the majority of its business. A franchised retail outlet on the other hand does. And that convenience comes at a price which is essentially passed along to the consumer.
There are a variety of online sites that specialize in replacement parts. Although each company is unique on its own there are three main formats that are easily identifiable in the realm of replacement car parts. The most common is the company that tries to stock just about every part available. They carry all sorts of brands, give you a variety of options and can usually still beat the prices of anything locally. The simple fact that the company providing the auto part has to stock another company's car part is a reason for a price mark-up. And this is the same basic idea for some of the specialized auto part sites. Let's take Volkswagen for example. There are some car parts sites that are run by VW enthusiasts and they specialize in the parts that are available for Volkswagens, this way they can cater to a targeted audience.
There are certain companies that only sell their own brand of auto parts. This means they do not have a retail markup that includes a markup to cover distribution of the parts from the manufacturer to one company and then to another. This lets the company that only sells its own auto parts offer them for much cheaper and still make enough of a profit level to remain in business. A company like this will specialize in the car parts that have the most crossover applications, i.e. the same part fits several vehicles, and the most commonly replaced auto parts. These are car parts like brake parts, hub bearings, struts, strut assemblies, and other frequently changed maintenance parts. A good example of a company like this is Prime Choice Auto Parts.

How to Change Brake Pads
Brakes are the single most important part of you vehicle, hands down. It is critical for your own and everyone else’s personal safety to make sure your brakes work properly. You shouldn’t be scared to change your own brakes, but you should be confident with your skills. If you don’t know the difference between a Phillips head and a flat head screw driver, you should bring your car to a mechanic.
Preparation tips:
Take plenty of time to familiarize yourself with the brakes before you start working on your car. Also work on one side at a time. This way, if you mess up you can reference the other side.
Obviously you will buy the pads before you start. But which ones will you buy? Cheap, generic pads wear out quickly and even though you may be spending less money now, you will ultimately be spending more money and time in the long run. More expensive pads are less prone to leaving your front wheels covered in unsightly black dust.
Changing the Pads:
1. Engage the parking brake put something behind the rear tires so that the car cannot move.
2. Loosen the lug nuts around the wheel.
3. Raise the car with a jack and secure it on jack stands.
4. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
5. Now you can see the brake calipers holding the brake pads in place against the rotor. There are two pads per wheel that squeeze the rotor. Use a C-clamp to compress the caliper piston into the caliper housing. This will make it possible to remove the caliper assembly and create enough space for the increased pad width of the new brake pads.
6. Unbolt the caliper mounting bolts and pull the caliper back from the rotor. Be careful not to bend or break the brake hose. Sometimes the caliper mounting bolts require you to use a torx or star bit instead of a normal socket. Plan ahead and make sure you have the right tools for the job to save yourself a trip back to the parts store before your brakes are disassembled.
7. Remove the brake pads from the caliper. Examine them for unusual or uneven wear. Is only one pad worn down? Are the pads worn down on an angle? These could be signs of problems that need to be addressed immediately.
8. This is also a good time to examine the condition of the rotors. If they have deep grooves, or if your car shudders when you hit the brakes, then you will need to get the rotors turned or replaced.
9. Install the new pads in the caliper. Usually, it's best to place the inner pad first, then the outer pad second. You may have to depress the piston fully into the caliper housing in order to provide enough space for the new pads.
10. Once the pads are properly seated in the caliper, put the caliper back on the rotor and bolt it firmly in place.
11. If everything is correct, you may put the wheel back on, hand tighten the lug nuts, and lower the car to the ground. Finish tightening the lug nuts in a star pattern so that they are even.
Replacing your pads is rather simple if you know what you are doing and have the right tools. If it’s your first time you might want to call a buddy over just to make sure to don’t skip any steps. Important: test your brakes before taking your car into traffic. Stop and start a few times just to make sure everything is installed properly.

If you are looking for quality products, I recommend EBC rotors and Hawk brake pads. I’ve found that they last much longer than generic parts. – Mike Rosania
Front brake pads and rotor replacement price?
What is a typical price for replacement of both front brake pads and rotors on a 1997 Nissan Altima GXE? Monroe Muffler and Brake is trying to charge me $449, then they offered me a coupon which brought it to $375. And I said no, because I could get the parts for much cheaper, so now they are saying $250. What is really a good, and fair price for this job (including labor).
Whoa, a shop changing prices three times is dangerous, this is a shoddy practice, they may damage CV boots, hoses or who knows what when they are servicing the car. Parts are around $90 (low end) rotors / pads labor should run another $90 Parts markup varies but 225 -250 sounds about right for a retail repair. Frankly if you bring in your own parts the warranty issues are on you, pads wear out in three months (oh yeah raymold, valuecraft etc pads can wear that fast) its all on you. I would reccomend Performance Friction Carbon Metallic, Bendix, Wagner, Duralast gold over generic el cheapo brands, but its your car, same holds true for rotors, Chinese, and Mexico cast rotors are not nearly as good as USA , Japan, Germany, Korean made rotors, I've seen Chinese rotors warp in weeks.
Now if they were going to use OEM rotors and Pads the repair will run more, the difference in parts quality will be noticed in a few months.
1983 Volvo 240 GLE review from Australia and New Zealand
What things have gone wrong with the car? No major faults in the year of ownership I enjoyed before writing it off. Alternator failed. Cheap and easy to access replacement ($300).
