Nothing quite compares with the freedom and discovery that you get riding a bicycle! From the moment your Dad let go of your seat when you first learned to ride, it opened up a door to another dimension, you weren't tied down any longer!

People say I'm nuts for riding my bike as far as I do, and in reality, I don't ride as far as many others do. I don't ride just because, I ride to explore new roads, I ride to explore myself, I ride because I LOVE to ride. I'm sure it sounds corny, but it's the truth, when I'm on my bike, time stands still, everyday problems and stress go away for a few sweet hours, it's just me and the road! So it was this past weekend as I decided to get a long ride in on Saturday morning...

My alarm sounded it's loud beeping at 4:45 am. "Damn" I thought, I'm not ready to wake up, but I knew if I wanted to get a long ride in, early in the morning would be the best opportunity. I rolled out of bed and found my cycling "uniform" my tight shorts, cycling jersey, and clipless bike shoes, all the pieces that usually get laughed at and ridiculed by the people who don't "ride". After getting dressed I topped off my water bottles and placed them securely in their cages, had a quick bowl of "Raisin Bran" and then it was time to ride. I wheeled my 19 lb carbon fiber companion out of the garage at 6 am, and with a firm "click" into my pedals I was free.

6 am on a Saturday morning means virtually no traffic, at least in central Illinois:) As I left the city limits the sun was just making it's appearance for the day, creating long shadows on the road in front of me, the cool breeze whipping by my ears. The road felt good, and my trusty bike was running perfectly, no sound but the tires rolling across the pavement and the gentle "whirrr" of the chain as I pedaled. The first 15 miles I encountered maybe 5 cars, it was just me, my bike, and the open road. The river valley was lit up by the early morning sun and there were patches of fog where the bodies of water lied, the world was just waking up. As I continued along the Great River Road, the scene was breathtaking as the bluff line gave way to obscure roadways cutting into the distance to destinations unknown.

As my route transitioned from lazy country road to main highway, traffic also started becoming more prevalent, but that's OK, that's just part of the ride. The shoulder meandered from wide and smooth, to narrow and treacherous, typical for these country highways, cycling isn't real mainstream around here, bike lanes aren't a priority, over time you just learn to deal with what you have. When I'm on my bike, time slows down, I have a chance to look around and take everything in. A road that had gone previously unnoticed catches my eye as I recognized the name from earlier, that route will have to be next time, another adventure waiting to be conquered.

Cycling jerseys are specially made with pockets on the back for easy access to food, and supplies. After 25 miles of riding, I decide to partake in a granola bar I brought along. I wait until coming through one of the small towns to eat it though, as the open road requires my undivided attention. Ahhh sweet energy, the light snack replenishes my body and carries me further down the road. The occasional dog barks as he sees me pass, warning me not to trespass on his turf, I heed his warning and continue on. By this time I'm almost home, down a few more country roads and up a few more hills. To my dismay I find my predetermined route has been freshly graveled, "Crap"!! My high dollar transport doesn't play well with gravel and it's a sketchy 1/2 mile or so dodging large rocks like I was navigating a mine field. The good thing about these country roads is they all seem to connect somewhere, a simple modification to my route and I was back on the beautifully smooth pavement of the highway! After a few more miles I pull into my driveway at 9 am. I thank my bike for carrying me over those 54 miles, for taking that trip with me, for allowing me to escape and enjoy the experience of the open road. My house is just waking up and starting their day, my ride is complete and now the entire day awaits before me.

People ask me why I do this kind of thing? I always answer, "If you have to ask why... you will never understand". I know why I ride, I ride for me, time to find out who I am and what I'm made of, I do it for the love of the ride!!

How To Choose The Best Urban Road Bike For You

Racing bikes are good bikes and they all have similar traits to them. The light weight frame that you might have to your bike may be made of some light weight metal such as aluminum. The wheels that you are riding on called tires are made to be able to withstand high pressures. The handle bars are slightly lower than usual and the gears and brakes may be in a cluster so you don't have to take your hands off the grips anytime.

If you just like to simply go on an easy going bike ride, than more than likely a racing type of bike isn't for you. The bike and its wheels are made smaller for lighter weight and the breaks are made for light weight also and not a quick stop so you may want another bike like a mountain bike. The gear ratio is probably going to be a lot longer on a racing bike to gain speed but you can get another bike such as the mountain bike that you can climb steep hills and mountains with, with ease.

With a light weight frame that you can pick up with one hand and the tight positions you may have to sit will make you accelerate at high speeds higher than a normal bike. The way the bike is made is to limit the wind and create a good position for the rider. With owning a racing bike they can reach pretty high speeds up to 35 mph I would say or at least what I have seen. They might be able to go even faster but I am not a bike rider fan so I wouldn't know.

Another thing that racing bikes don't have that a regular bike would is mud flaps to keep you from getting mud all over the back of your legs and bottom. Mudguards are good when riding in a dirt environment or a muddy road. As I stated this is also a choice that goes with a regular bike and not available in racing bikes.

Although you might have been thinking of getting a racing bike, and might have had the rack up for it in the garage already. It might not be the bike for you if you just like to go on easy rides and not fast speedy races. Other people may prefer to challenge their friends or family when owning a racing bike, but the family just may like the regular bikes too. Just choose whichever bike is right for you and what you want out of it. Don't get the bike that you just want to have to own, get the bike that's right for you and that you will enjoy riding.

What is the difference between road bike handle bars?

I am new in the whole cycling scene and was curious about the different type of handlebars im seeing. There are the normal one (ram horns is what i call them) The full curve one, and then the bullhorn handle bars. What is the difference, if any? Are they made for different uses? Can the bullhorns support the same brake levers and shifters as on the ramhorns? Any input would be awesome? Thanks guys!

The basic differences in handle bars are what they are used for, the ram horns as you call them are used for some types of racing but generally for all around riding. They are supposedly Ergonomically designed. The drop section allows for plenty of hand positions to ensure a comfortable grip, reduce fatigue and maximize braking/shifting performance. The TT bars or Bullhorn handle bars as you call them are made for Time trials, ( short runs with flat out speed ) and not really for everyday riding. You can make regular brakes work on the TT bars but they make brakes designed for those bars and as far as shifters, if you used bar end shifters you mite make them work, I don't believe the sti shifters would work real well. There really is not much use for TT bars unless your going to be doing a lot of racing, if you want a more aerodynamic position try using aero bars like these http://www.performancebike.com/bikes//Product_10052_10551_1033712_-1___ They just attach or bolt to your regular bars for a more aero position. Hope this helped you out.

Homeboys: Horner and Decker – Bend’s best at their best
A rerun of Thursday’s stage of the Tour de France was on the television behind the bar as people settled onto their barstools at Three Creek Brewing in Sisters. Sipping a beer, one patron commented that it might have been neat if Lance Armstrong at least won a stage to finish his career. The guy next to me replied, pointing at the television set, “Yea, but hey, Lance’s teammat ...
