Since the invention of cars, drivers have had some sort of device to play music even if it was portable.  Many years ago, when you drove your car, you only had the radio to listen to. The radio was proven to be a distraction even then.  As technology progressed in vehicles, drivers had the option of having 8 tracks, cassette and then CD players installed in their cars.  With today's technology, tapes and CDs are an item for the history books. Now the major media devices are MP3 players and iPods.   These small music players have the ability to hold someone's entire music collection in a small "razor thin" electronic device.  Now people can listen to their music on the go...anytime, anywhere, which has posed some problems.Â
In the last few years, manufactures have been installing inputs in vehicles that allow people to hook up their MP3 or iPod players. If you are not able to have a new car with an MP3 player connection it can be difficult to listen to your music. Lacking the proper connection, some drivers have turned to listening to their players through their earphones while driving their vehicles.Â
While driving any vehicle, using earphones presents many risks and is illegal in most states.Â
The most obvious reason this is dangerous is that you cannot hear what is happening around you. With headphones on, it becomes very hard to hear emergency vehicles, and other cars that might honk to alert you of a pedestrian, another vehicle or potential hazards.  In addition, wearing headphones prevents you from hearing your own vehicle which may be making noises indicating a mechanical problem.Â
A final problem with using your MP3 player in your car is the potential distraction, even without the earphones on.  Many iPods and MP3 players have enough storage space for your whole music collection. With a great amount of songs to select from, driver's can be distracted scrolling through songs and picking the "perfect" driving play list.Â
Not only is it illegal to wear them while driving a vehicle, but it is also illegal to wear them while riding a bicycle.  Remember most states apply their driving laws to cyclists, which includes proper use of hand signals, lane obedience, etc. Many times a vehicle is not able to see bike traffic, so it is even more important cyclists hear cars and trucks. Â
If you do have an iPod or MP3 player and find it impossible to drive without your music, there are a few things you can do to make your drive a bit safer:
1.     If your vehicle does not have it hook up consider buying a FM transmitter or a cassette tape adapter. Both of these devices will enable you to play your music player through your stereo.Â
2.    In order to avoid becoming distracted while driving make up some play lists of your favorite songs, this way you will not be scrolling through your music collection trying to pick out songs you like.
3. If you find that you have dropped or need to adjust your music player, find a safe place pull into. If you must pull of the road, pull all the away off and give yourself three feet of extra space margin away from the roadway. This will provide extra protection from a distracted driver who may drift into your lane and with give you a better view when you are ready to get back on the road.Â
By following these tips you can reduce your distractions and enjoy driving while listening to your favorite music. Â

The New Jeep Patriot: A Solid Performer
The words "Jeep" and "off-road" go together like sand dunes and Hi-Lift winches. And, with the improvements made to the new 2010 Jeep Patriot, its reputation for handling mud, hills and mountain streams shows no sign of slacking off.
Incorporating what Chrysler has appropriately titled the "Freedom II" package, the Patriot features enhancements that include an additional inch of ride-height over previous models as well as a 27.5-degree approach, a 23-degree brakeover and a 31.4-degree departure angle. With a solid brake system, reduced body roll and the steering decently weighted, the Freedom II package also includes its own continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a ground-hugging 19:1 low ratio for crawling over rocks, stream beds and other uneven surfaces. In addition, the Freedom II comes equipped with genuine Jeep parts that include fog lights, tow hooks, 17-inch all-terrain tires and a full-size spare with an air filtration system.
But, man cannot live by the trail alone. Getting to and from your destination often accounts for a good chunk of any trip, and Chrysler must have had this in mind when incorporating a slew of new and improved interior entertainment features. GPS, MP3 connectivity, satellite radio, a UConnect hands-free system and 30 gigs worth of storage—the Patriot's added bonuses make the road seem a little less long.
In addition to the built-in components, the 2010 Patriot is capable of supporting a wide range of add-on Jeep accessories like car monitors and an iPod car adaptor. Car monitors feature bright LCD screens with bold picture quality with a wide range of input options, allowing you to take your DVDs or gaming system on the road wherever you go. With a relatively painless installation and a sleek look that matches the shape, fabric and color of the Patriot's stock headrests, car monitors are a simple and attractive upgrade. Similarly, an iPod car adaptor provides the highest possible fidelity and features the added bonus of charging your digital music player at the same time. They plug directly into your car stereo, so you don't get the hiss, crackle and pop of cassette adapters and FM radio transmitters.
There's one thing that can be said for the 2010 Patriot: it's been designed for digital sound. It includes a 368-watt, nine-speaker Boston Acoustic sound system, providing high-quality sound even at the loudest possible decibel—great for breaking up the silence of the backcountry with some choice selections from the Beastie Boys, Weezer or Green Day. Plus, two of those Jeep speakers are even attached to the hatch and fold down when open, making them perfect for the campsite or a tailgating party.
While the interior of the 2010 Patriot has received some improvements, including the removal of much of the plastic that had been incorporated into the dash on previous models, there still may be a slight lack of interior room. Adding on a roof rack is the easiest solution to this problem, enabling you to quickly and easily transport bikes, snowboards and a wide variety of other gear on your roof, saving valuable interior space while also preventing these items from blocking your vision. And, when you have to haul even more gear, couple your Patriot with a trailer hitch, to safely tow jet skis, snowmobiles or anything else too large to toss onto your roof.

road bike cassette swap?
If I swap a 9 speed cassette from a 12-25 to a 12-27 , would I need to make any adjustments to the chain or the derailleurs?
Check it out as the answers already said but chances are no. A 25 to 27 is a small difference and I've changed several cassettes on bikes with even larger differences without a problem.
