liquid latex in Road Bike tyres?
Has anyone had experience with putting liquid latex in road bike tubes.
Does it work (seals punctures)?
Does it affect the ride?
I haven't put latex in my road tubes, but I've put Slime in there and it was a big mistake. Slime is a great product and I run the atv/tractor version of it in all of my mountain tubes. It works. In a narrow road wheel, however, it takes forever to balance out and for the first mile or so (especially in cooler temps) you'll have an irritating and destabilizing thump-bump-thump until the liquid disperses evenly. Every time you stop, you'll have the same thing. In mountain tubes this isn't an issue, but when I put it in my road tubes, I took it right back out after two rides.
Latex, on the other hand, is more flowable. I haven't tried in in my road tubes and won't likely. For one thing, it's only good for 4-8 months max before it dries out and globs up. Slime lasts for a couple years. I have friends who have bought gallon jugs of latex from craft stores and used it in their tubeless mtn setups and it worked alright most of the time. We did have a few rides where it wouldn't seal up and we had a big mess to deal with. Slime has never done that to me even with some pretty large cuts and punctures from rocks.
Bontrager/Trek came out with a Slime-type ethylene product that has a thinner consistency, so maybe that would work ok in a road tube, but I'm not going to mess with it. The other sealants on the market (Stan's, Geax, Specialized, etc) are latex varieties.
I think your better choices for dealing with flat prevention are to get a good quality tire with a kevlar/aramid protection layer under the tread (not a kevlar bead (folding), but a kevlar belt), or to go with a tire liner like Slime, Mr. Tuffy, etc. I vote for the tire.....that's what I do. I live in mega bur country and rarely get flats on the road. I've ridden a few different liners and honestly they all made the tires hard to install and feel a little stiff/different while riding.
EDIT: Dougmtcx, latex and Slime are different. Latex is...latex. When it dries it's kinda like rubber cement, and it only lasts in tires/tubes a short time before drying up, even if you add extra thinner or water to it. Slime is ethylene glycol and only barely dries up....usually lasts a couple years or more. I've not experienced the high pressure problems you have (I run it in 2.4" tires at 65psi on my urban rig and it works great). If you're using the normal Slime and find it not sealing sometimes, try out the auto/atv/tractor version. It has tiny rubber bits in it that help to seal larger punctures faster and better. The only time I've had Slime leak was when I injected it into presta tubes and then covered the hole with a stick-on patch.....not compatible with the glue. Old fashioned glue-on patches work fine with it, however. The easier solution for presta is to find the tubes with removable cores.
