There are a wide selection of bikes that have been designed and built just for ladies. Every woman's personality differs and no one woman is alike. Some women have shorter torsos and longer legs and some have lesser body strength.
Dr. Pruitt who has been working with the US national team riders at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs explains cyclists fitting problems. According to him even if a bike fits a woman's length, its top tube, stem or crank arms may be too long and its saddle could be too narrow. If a bike does not fit right then the rider may experience pain in the back, neck, hip or butt.
These problems are now understood by most manufacturers and they are designing bikes that fit women better. The seat and head angles and the lengths of the main tubes are made to fit a woman's body shape which are tested to give a performance like other bikes.
Various bikes come in various shapes, sizes and group sets. There are a few considerations to be made while buying a woman's bike. Lets look at a few of them:
1. Frame: Women usually need shorter top tubes because of their short torsos. But if the woman's height falls under 5 foot 4, then select a smaller diameter front wheel to avoid the front wheel to come too close. Check whether the seat angle is correct to ensure your saddle is in the correct position above the crank set.
A 72 or 73 degree seat angle is ideal for women with longer thighs and a slightly steeper angle for short thighed people.
2.Stem. The stem should have a shorter forward extension which brings the handlebar closer to the saddle.
3. Handlebar. Since woman's shoulders tend to be narrower, always opt for drop style road handlebars which proves more comfortable to a woman's shoulder. Usually mountain bikes and hybrids have flat handlebars which can be easily shortened with a pipe cutter at a bike shop.
4. Crank arms. Look for 160 or 165 mm of length for the arms which is stamped in metal on the back of the arms better suited for women. But mountain bike crank arms should be 5 mm longer than those on road bikes which is helpful in giving you better leverage for steep climbs. So the best size for mountain bike will be 170 mm.
5. Saddle. Opt for saddles that are wider to support the abdomen bones and from exerting extra pressure on the pelvic region. Such type of saddles are called anatomical saddles and can be found in stock at your local shop.
6. Brake levers. Short reach break levers are ideal for women who have smaller hands and shorter fingers. Usually most of the mountain bike levers have adjustment screws that lets you adjust the distance to the bar.
With these small details in mind its easier to select a cycling bike for women.
Ladies go to womens road bike for all suitable road bike products.
What's a Compact Crankset?
For those who are still relatively latest to the sector of cycling you'll have heard of the term compact crankset but were uncertain as to what that meant. How does a compact crankset not the same from standard cranksets and what are the advantages to using one? You could be stunned at what it basically is and the applications for using them, together with who helped popularize them.
As the name implies, a compact crankset is going to be smaller than a characteristic crankset. It will have a 110 millimeter size, which is noticeably smaller than common 130 mm or 135 mm sizes. This in turn permits you to have smaller chainrings, with fewer teeth, too.
One of the main elements of a current compact crankset is that it's a double crankset, meaning it features 2 chainrings as opposed to 3. The smaller crank arms and configuration make allowance for this without losing the low gear flexibleness and power of a triple crankset.
One of the advantages of all of this is that you can start shaving weight off your bike. As significant bicyclists know, when it's crunch time, two ounces can go a good distance to making or breaking your performance against the competition and against the clock.
Another benefit to the compact crankset is that you can achieve and maintain higher r.p.m's when you are climbing because you are staying in a lower gear. This is one of the tactics that helped make Lance Armstrong such a success in the mountainous stages of the Tour de France. By maintaining such high rpm's he was in a position to gain a maximum amount of power and speed without knackering himself out.
In addition, with less spacing between your gears you'll be able to maintain your pace with a lot less work through inauspicious conditions. This includes sudden changes in wind or changes in the elevation that can have an effect on your pace and your exerted effort.
It's also necessary to note the above describes compact cranksets for road cycling. For mountain biking, a compact crankset refers to a triple crankset which has been made smaller to help the rider avoid more stumbling blocks in the course.
clearly, a compact crankset has many different advantages. Road cycle riders can make their bikes lighter and can maintain higher RPMs up hills, while also maintaining their pace in other circumstances. A compact crankset can help in giving you the extra edge you've been trying to find.
