Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike: The Right Ride In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories: Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain. Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine. Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family. The Right Price A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability. Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use. Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension. High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action. The Right Size Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips: Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height. Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit. Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance. The Right Accessories When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons: Helmet (this is a must!) Seat pack Lock Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages Spare tubes Portable bike pump Gloves

There is a massive range of accessories available for mountain bikes and it is possible to spend as much as you did on the bike. But a lot of the accessories are gimmicks and are not needed for typical mountain biking. There are, however, some mountain bike accessories that are essential.

Helmet

This is the most obvious accessory for mountain biking. It is advisable for any cyclist to wear a helmet and it is particularly important if you are going to be mountain biking. It is common to fall off your bike when mountain biking off road and the surface can be unforgiving. A good solid helmet is necessary to protect you head from any impact with the ground, trees or rocks.

Cycle Shorts

Mountain biking on rough bumpy roads is very hard on the body. It is very common for cyclists to have a sore bottom after a hard days mountain biking. A good pair of cycle shorts will help absorb some of the impact.

Gloves

For the same reason as above, gloves are an important part of your mountain bike kit. A lot of people overlook gloves, but they do absorb a significant amount of the shock that travels up through the handlebars. Gloves with gel padding are the best ones to buy for mountain biking.

Other Clothing

If you are going to be out in the countryside for a day, or even half a day, make sure you protect yourself from the weather. A lightweight waterproof jacket is needed in case of rain. An outer layer is a good idea on hot sunny days to protect your skin from the harmful sunrays.

Repair kit

Mountain bikes are prone to breaking down when you least expect it. A basic repair kit is a great mountain bike accessory to own and can be a real lifesaver. This should contain a puncher repair kit, allen key, screw driver (to adjust the front and rear derailleur) and a pump. Other equipment includes a spoke tool, spanners and a bottom bracket tool. Of course, a lubricant is essential!

Cleaning equipment

Mountain biking can be a dirty sport and bikes tend to not like dirt! So the right cleaning equipment is required to keep your mountain bike in good working order. It is possible to buy stray that will degrease your gears. A small brush is often necessary to remove the stubborn dirt.

Bike bottles and cages

Make sure you carry plenty of liquid when mountain biking. You should buy a cage to hold a water bottle. If it will fit, two cages is a good idea so that you can carry extra liquid.

Cycle lights

If you are going to do any cycling at night, you will need lights. There is no point taking the risk, as it is easy for cars to not see you.

Lock

If you are going to leave your mountain bike unattended for any length of time, then you will need a lock. Of course this depends on where you live, but in most places, bikes are stolen on a frequent basis. You can get locks that come with a guarantee against breaking.

Summary

Mountain biking is a fantastic form of exercise and can be enjoyed by most people. With the right mountain bike and accessories, you will have the time of your life.

Women’s Bicycle

Women’s Bicycles

Bicycles with “Step through” frames, traditionally referred to as “Women’s Bicycles”, are easier to get on and off of because they eliminate the top tube between the seat and the handlebars. Many women continue to prefer this type of frame, but the ease of use of these bicycles also makes them attractive for a variety of different riders regardless of gender. These include delivery riders that make many stops, older riders, riders with limited mobility and anyone else who would prefer not to have to lift their leg two and half feet off the ground to get onto their bike.

Dating back to the late 1800s, the step-through frame allowed women wearing dresses or skirts to take advantage of this wonderful new invention. In fact, women’s bicycles played a major role in women’s emancipation.

The Bicycle and Women’s Emancipation

The power of mobility that the bicycle granted to women in Western nations was an unprecedented boon to their independence and their participation in greater society.

Suffragist Susan B. Anthony was quoted as saying: "…I think bicycling has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel...the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood."

The bicycle riding New Woman was a force for political change, and also provoked changes in women’s attire, casting aside corsets and long skirts for more practical and less restricting clothing.

Evolution of the Modern Bicycle

In the years since its invention, there have been many innovations to make the bicycle safer, more comfortable and easier to use. These innovations include many different frame types, more comfortable seats, better breaks and the addition of gears and derailleurs. There is even a company that has added a patented automatic gear changing system called AutoShift to their bicycles. This allows the rider to enjoy the scenery without having to worry about what gear they are in. A user of one of these bicycles offers her reactions: “My bike was a gift,” says Nicole of her step through bicycle with the AutoShift system, “I ride it everyday to work, and I honestly did not know that the bicycle was changing gears for me. All I knew is that it had a very smooth ride; I just get on it and go. I love my bike!” If you think about it, it makes sense -- when was the last time you tried to figure out what gear your automatic car was in?

road bike parts questions? Can I mix sora w/105?

Can I use a 105 front derailleur with a rear sora derailleur?

I assume they should be both 105's, but not sure

If I change to a rear 105 derailleur can I still use the 8 gear cassette thats on there now?

I have a slightly older (within 10 years) Trek 2200... triple
Thanks for the responses.

I had bought a new frame and I moved the sora components but the front dérailleurs clamp was too small.

I suppose ill use it like this for the rest of the summer and next year upgrade to the tiagra or 105's

Thanks!

Today's Shimano 105 (5600/5603) components are 10-sp.

A 105 FD-5603 front der will have too narrow of a cage for the wider 8-sp chain to happily travel through without rubbing a lot. Not saying you can't do it, but it will be noisy if you do.

A 105 rear der works fine with a 9-sp chain and will probably work okay with the 8-sp chain. 8-sp chains are slightly wider yet, and the connecting pins are not flush as they are with 9- and 10-sp chains.

Are you getting a screaming deal on 105? Personally, I wouldn't bother incorporating 105 components on a Sora bike until I was ready to completely switch out the shifters and drivetrain at once. And even then, I'd be tempted by the better prices & deals on Tiagra unless I had dreams of competing and felt I had to go with ten cogs. Tiagra's a good value, and the derailleurs will play nice with 8-sp Sora shifters and chains if you aren't making a complete swap from Sora.

That's what I think.
