When you have an integrated circuit (IC) or many such devices on a board, where each IC has 100 or more pins, it is mandatory to have some tool to test connections and verify operation. Having this in mind, an expert group prepared a specification for testing that was standardized in 1990 as the IEEE Std. 1149.1. It is also known as the JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) standard.

JTAG is a method for testing connections on printed circuit boards (PCBs) that are implemented at the integrated circuit (IC) level. It is very difficult to test complex circuits with traditional in-circuit testers. Because of physical space constraints and inability to access very small components and BGA devices, the cost for board testing has increased significantly. JTAG is an elegant solution to overcome problems with physical in-circuit testers.

With JTAG you can test interconnects between integrated circuits on a board without using physical test probes. This is a big advantage because you don't need any additional customized tool for testing. Of course, the device has to be JTAG enabled. This means an additional cell (a boundary-scan cell) for each pin. Boundary-scan cell can set or read data on each pin. Boundary-scan cells are connected together and the data is serially shifted into the boundary-scan cells. The process is controlled from a serial data path called the scan path or scan chain. This is the basic principle of the JTAG interface.

JTAG eliminates the need for a large number of test vectors, which would be needed to initialize all the devices. Using JTAG means shorter test times, increased diagnostic capability higher test coverage, and lower equipment cost. Although there are many variations of the JTAG header on the board it is possible to use standard JTAG signals with almost any JTAG interface and boundary-scan software.

An additional benefit with JTAG interface is that it can be also used for programming and debugging. Many microcontrollers, FLASH memories, FPGAs and similar devices can be programmed via JTAG interface. And the same interface can be used for debugging. JTAG is a big step toward standard interfaces in electronics industry.

There are many JTAG cables that can be used on more than one device. In fact, JTAG cable is more than a cable. Usually it has some small electronics to boost signals and to provide standard computer interface. The price of the simplest JTAG cable can be as low as $5.

Near the front of the foot, there are usually 3 to 11 threaded holes where the spikes may be screwed using a spike wrench. There are usually no spikes near the heel, except for high jump and javelin shoes. Some shoes have permanent or "fixed" spikes.

Sprint spikes generally have more support, and a stiffer, more aggressive spike plate. They often are built minimalistically, with as little material and hence weight as possible. Some have zip-up covers for laces, to improve aerodynamics. Distance spikes have a more relaxed plate, more heel support, and contain fewer spike points. They are built as much for support as they are for speed. Field shoes are very different, with each shoe configured for the demands of its event.

The spikes of the shoe vary in size. While most range between 3 millimetres (3/16 inch) and 12 mm (1/2 in), with the most common being the 6 mm (1/4 in), there are a number of specialty lengths, as well as minimal "blank" spikes used to cover a spike hole. The three main types of spikes are the pyramid, the needle (or pin), and the compression tier (or Christmas tree) spike. Pyramids are conical spikes that taper to a sharp point. They normally have a maximum diameter nearly equal to the diameter of the threads of the spike. Needles also have a sharp point, but a thinner cone diameter. The purpose of both is to penetrate the track surface and so derive its traction from its position. The alternate variant for synthetic tracks is the Christmas tree spike. It uses a terraced cone shape with a flat end to, instead of penetrate, compress the track below it upon impact, and use the track's reaction force to in fact return energy to the runner, increasing his speed. It also reduces the damage incurred in the event of "spiking" or contact by the spikes with another runner. Spikes also come in either steel or ceramic varieties, as well as multiple colors (or unpainted).

Most spikes have the toe of the shoe pointing up, not touching the ground. This is called "taper" and is designed to make the runner run on their toes to run faster. The more aggressive a shoe is, the stronger the taper. Sprint spikes are generally the most aggressive, with the shoes becoming less aggressive as the distance of the race that they are intended for increases. Marathons, for example, are run in racing flats, which have no taper.

Can I use Shimano chain replacment pins on a SRAM chain?

I have pins for a 9-speed shimano chain. Will they work on a 9-speed SRAM chain?

I don't know, but you could give it a try if you want. Not sure why you'd want to, though. At $1.50 to $2.00 each, it's an expensive experiment for something like a chain. Probably simpler to just carry a few extra links in your toolbag if you need them on the trail.
