Dust to Glory List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $6.16 |
|
Don't be surprised if you feel a dry, tickling sensation in the back of your throat after watching the slam-bang racing documentary Dust to Glory. It's probably from the lingering sand and silt spewed from the knobby wheels of an array of machines that skitter from one end of the Baja Peninsula to the other. Using 90 cameras in a variety of formats, director Dana Brown captures the giddy danger of the race with truly visceral force. In 1967, a few California thrill-seekers had the Eureka spirit to take their homemade race cars for some whooping-up in the wide-open land just a few hours away. Since then, the Baja 1000 has turned into a party-fueled happening that's more akin to Burning Man than the Indy 500. It's billed as the world's longest nonstop race, running point-to-point for 1,000 miles through the Mexican desert from Tijuana to La Paz--pretty much the entire length of Baja. Dana Brown is the son of Bruce Brown, whose 1966 film The Endless Summer sparked a surfing craze, and still holds up as an incomparable ode to the existential surfing lifestyle. Dust to Glory is by no means so profound and uses more of a Warren Miller thrill-marketing style (he of the annual throwaway extreme-skiing films). Cameras swoop down from helicopters, careen through silt, and are put into tracks over which vehicles pass at extreme speeds. In spite of the adrenaline rush, Dust to Glory is ultimately more about what people think about the higher implications of the competition. One veteran finisher describes it this way: "It's like having all 10,000 close calls of your life in one day. It makes regular life feel like slow-motion." --Ted Fry Director Dana Brown ("Step into Liquid") presents this adrenaline-charged overview of the notorious Tecate Score Baja 1000 challenge. More than simply just a race, the annual event features the world's greatest car, motorcycle, dune buggy, truck, and ATV racers facing off in an endurance test against each other and the harsh conditions of the Baja desert. Competitors include Mario Andretti, Robby Gordon, Johnny Campbell, Steve Hengeveld, and J.N. Roberts. 97 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, Spanish; deleted scenes; featurettes. |

Torque (Widescreen Edition) List Price: $12.97 Sale Price: $1.95 |
|
A lot has changed in the biker-movie genre since Hell's Angels on Wheels, and Torque may be the new benchmark of feverish chopper action. Martin Henderson plays Cary, a speed king and relatively civilized outlaw with a knack for annoying everyone, including drug smugglers, the FBI, an ex-girlfriend, and, worst of all, biker gang leader Trey (Ice Cube), who thinks Cary killed his brother. On the run from everyone, Cary survives by playing all sides against one another. But the story is less important than the frantic, over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek action surrounding it. The Fast and the Furious producer Neal H. Moritz is responsible for this crazy, violent, yet appealingly sardonic cowboys-on-wheels piece. --Tom Keogh Acclaimed music video director Joseph Kahn's debut feature stars Martin Henderson as a biker who gets set up to take the fall for the murder of motorcycle gang leader Ice Cube's brother. Now, Henderson must race against time to prove his innocence before Cube and determined FBI agent Adam Scott track him down. Adrenaline-pumping actioner also stars Jaime Pressly, Monet Mazur, Jay Hernandez. 84 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; music video; more. |

Bicycling is one of the best form of exercise. It is a low impact exercise, which means that it's easy on the knees. Anyone who knows how to ride a bike can just take up cycling and start burning calories. This sport is especially suitable for those who are overweight. For these people, jogging or running is very painful because they have to carry all that weight, and the knees can hurt very badly after a short run. Cycling is comparatively more fun and less painful.
To take up cycling, you have to first decide the type of bicycle you want to ride in. There are many types of bikes in the market, and most are broadly categorized into 2 categories - mountain bikes and road bikes. For a start, it's always better to choose a mountain bicycle over a road bicycle. A mountain bike is much easier to control. You ride at a slower speed, but the ride is definitely more comfortable. You may decided to upgrade to a full road bike once your fitness level picks up.
Then there are different models of mountain bikes to choose from. Before choosing, make a quick assessment of the area that you will be riding in. Is it mostly dirt tracks? Or will there be asphalt that you will be riding on. Different models are built differently to suit different terrain. So to purchase the wrong bike may dampen your enjoyment.
For example, do you know that there are bicycles with full suspension and bicycles with just front suspension? How do you choose?
Well, if you know nothing about mountain bikes, you would argue that the full suspension bike offers a more comfortable ride. After all, all the bumps are mostly absorbed by the suspension. But that also mean that some power is lost in the process. So what if you want a more energy efficient ride or a faster ride?
In that case, the front suspension machine is a better choice. Most of the bumps in the front will still be absorbed by the front forks. However, if the terrain is mostly flat, you can expect the ride to be uneventful. Having just the front suspension means that there is minimal power loss. Most of the power generated by your pedaling action is transferred to the rear wheel. This translates to faster overall speed.
But if the terrain you are riding in requires you to negotiate lots of bumpy dirt tracks, the dual suspension bike would be a better option. You can't go fast anyway, since it's a track with many slopes, twists, and turns. So power transference becomes less important. Control and comfort becomes of ultimate importance here.
So know your terrain well, and you can take the next step, which is to start shopping for a mountain bike.

What You Need To know About Off Road Biking
For the uninitiated, off road biking literally means taking your bike off the road and driving on dirt tracks right in the lap of nature. It could be pure riding your mountain bike or a combination of hiking and biking.
Motorcycles are very popular because they make the rider feel macho and rugged. Well, as far as bicycles are concerned, off road biking has all the machismo that any rider would ever require. There are many riders who claim that a person cannot be called a good cyclist until he or she has tried out the dirt trails and has successfully undertaken mountain biking. Mountain biking or off road biking utilizes every ounce of your cycling skills. You should not just be in perfect control of your bike but must be completely confident as far as your cycling abilities are concerned. There will be a small dirt track which you have to stick to throughout your ride. Any slip up will take you hurtling down the mountain or shall send you into the thick trees.
Off road biking needs proper preparation and the right set of skills. You have to prepare for mountain biking just as you would prepare for a hike in the mountains. However, in this case, you will have to prepare not just yourself but your bike as well.
If you think off road biking is tough, there is no doubt that it is so. However, that does not mean off road biking is suitable only for those who have a death wish. In fact, mountain biking is a lot better than hiking.
For starters, you get to travel a lot faster on your bike as compared to hiking your way to the top. Further, the ride upwards may be physically grueling but the ride downwards will be an absolute joy. All you need to do is retain control on your bike and your speed and you will simply breeze through downhill until you reach ground level.
There are some rules and guidelines that must never be ignored when going off road with your bike.
Maximum accidents amongst off road bikers occur due to two reasons. One, the rider is not experienced enough to go off road with his or her bike. Two, the biker grew overconfident and met an animal or a hiking party or a vehicle on the other side of a bend or curve. In either case, you suffer because you lost control on your bike.
Off road biking is fun but it will punish any person who does not respect the sport. If you intend to participate in off road biking, make it a point to go along with a friend. It is not necessary to ride together. All you need to do is agree on a certain meeting point at the end of the trip. This will ensure that at least one person is present to help you out in case you get stuck in a spot of bother.
Further, never go off road biking without adequate preparations to treat any accident or injury. Cuts, scrapes and gashes are very common in off road biking. Having a good first aid kit with you is a good idea.

Cyclists: My road bike is a 9 speed but going up hills is impossible!?
My road bike has 2 cogs front, 9 in the back. The guy at the bike shop said my bike is pretty good and that a 9 speed set is pretty standard. But today I went for a 20km ride some parts were long uphill stretches. Using my "easiest" gear, small cog front largest one in the back, but I was SUFFERING trying to make it up these hills.
Comparing riding this bike with a 21 speed mountain bike I had as a kid, the easiest gear on this road bike feels SO tough, and there's no way I could possibly make it up hills with this bike. Do you have any thoughts on this? Am I a wuss for not being able to ride a standard 9 speed road bike up hills?
Please advise, thanks!
Since you asked, yes, you're a wuss. There is only one way to get better at going uphill, and that is to keep doing it. Eventually you'll get better. Just remember to alternate tough climbs with some good high rpm speed work on the flats. Another good idea is to use the same gear coming down the hill that you used going up. Don't just coast, spin your a** off.
You'll never be good if you aren't willing to SUFFER.
