How many people do you know who have used their college or advanced degree as an excuse to stop learning? Are you one of them? What is preventing you from sharpening your saw? Do you lack the time, tuition or patience? Maybe it's easier than you think!
Commuter Downtime
It's been said that commuters here in Chicago experience only two seasons in the course of a year: winter and construction. Both result in delays and frustration for all commuters. If we add up the time spent on both legs of our trip, most of us have between one to two hours of lost time each day. When these seasons become more severe, it gets even worse. With all that time spent commuting, we're lucky to have time for dinner, family and sleep before the routine repeats the next day. And then at work, we're continuously challenged to do more with less. Who has time for personal or professional enrichment?
An Off-Ramp Memory
Earlier this year, I took some time to sharpen the saw and attended one of those Motivational Extravaganza events that featured high profile speakers Colin Powell, Tom Hopkins, Lovie Smith and an oldie but goodie: Zig Ziglar.
I became disciple of Zig Ziglar's over twenty years ago when I borrowed his cassette program, See You At the Top, from the library. To this day, I find myself using Zig's quotes continuously in my work with clients. And I can confirm that he does too. Mr. Ziglar is over 80 years young now and still tours and speaks, always accompanied by the Red Head, his wife of over 50 years, who his listeners have come to know.
In speaking to the crowd at Allstate Arena, Zig reminded me of how we became acquainted when he spoke about the opportunities for enrichment at The Automobile University. I remembered that we figuratively met on-campus at AU. So, I've taken it upon myself to promote this fine, underappreciated institution and create this brief brochure for our ongoing alma mater...
The Automobile University
Automobile University is an institution of higher learning open to anyone who commutes. It offers endless opportunities to put that frustrating down time to productive use. While Automobile University does not issue diplomas, it provides those with or without diplomas the opportunity to enrich themselves without sacrificing valuable work or family time.
The AU Campus: Its always easy to take a tour
At AutomobileUniversity..
- We allow you to choose your own courses and teachers from among the best in the world who have published audio books. Stephen Covey, Malcolm Gladwell, Tom Peters, Jim Collins, Tony Robbins, Ken Blanchard, Zig and hundreds more.
- You can skip irrelevant lectures whenever you want and even fire incompetent professors. Try that at Harvard!
- If you have trouble understanding a concept or want greater understanding and retention, just start over and repeat it as many times as you want.
- Its easy to enroll. We don't care about your past GPA.
- We don't have a football team. But this season, we've won as many games as Notre Dame.
- Our fight song is "On the Road Again". School Colors? We'll match your paint job!
- You don't need to take out student loans to pay for tuition.
- Graduation is strongly discouraged.
- You may not be able to impress people with a fancy piece of paper from a prestigious institution. But, you have an opportunity to surpass those who have used their diploma as an excuse to stop proactively learning.

Instructors Course Attended by M.D of Team Spirit Cycling Camps Limited
What a fantastic course Cycle Training Wales organise. The top instructors Andrew and Nick provided excellent tuition in the fundamentals of instructor training over 4 days. Based in Cardiff Cycle Training Wales also provide a short mechanics course for cyclists.
If you’re a regular commuter or want to get back on the bike for a regular fitness regime, they have all you need to know to get started.
National Standard instructor training will equip you with the skills to teach cycling to children and adults.
“This course covers all the skills required to deliver cycling courses, including:
•National Standard training objectives
•activities and techniques to teach NS levels 1 to 3
•risk assessment and emergency procedures
•protection of children and vulnerable adults”
The mechanics course is as follows from the wording in their website:
“This one-day course is aimed at those who wish to develop skills for checking and repairing bicycles. Participants will be able to work on their own bikes during the day session. The course will include:
•safety checking
•wheel and tyre removal
•puncture repair
•brake adjustment and pad replacement
•chain checking and replacement
•gear adjustment
•hub adjustments
•handlebar, headset, and saddle adjustments
•cleaning and lubrication”
The group I attended with were enthusiastic, humorous and varied in background and work experience. With a basic training of level 1 to help gauge the skill level of cyclists before progressing to level 2 and 3, various activities were introduced to motivate and develop basic cycling skills. The following day we were taken back to the empty car park which was already risk assessed before arrival by our instructors. We then began the nervous task of becoming an instructor for what seemed like hours but was probably just a few minutes. Each of us were given a session plan to perform. With degrees of success from us all the experience was fantastic. Each attendee were given feedback by the group and therefore knew where to correct our performance next time.
Here comes the rain again! The heavens opened up and we all got drenched but not cold. With this part of the course complete we headed back on our bikes to Chapter House canteen/cafe. Theory part of the next level conducted in the classroom this afternoon...slowly drying out but at least the hot coffee and some food made the morale become a little more raised.
Level 3 was interesting, actual quiet roads with a few ‘t’ junctions, parked cars and a few coppers looking for a criminals thrown into the mix. Manoeuvres I normally take for granted on an everyday basis cycling through the roads in Gwent were totally broken down to a basic level. Each potential hazard, obstacle and potential scenario were considered and how to explain this to a client who’s first experience would be riding on the highway with you.
A real eye opener to say the least. The final day took us into the busiest place on the planet...well it seemed like it to me. With so many obstacles and pedestrians walking straight out in front of you at any given moment, cars pulling out and stopping sharply in front of you...I knew this was going to be a big test. With the added thought of actually instructing a fellow attendee through the roads of Cardiff I was on edge to say the least.
But with thanks to Nick and Andrew my fears were buried as Nick gave a brief chat on how to handle the situation. This became a breeze and I did get excited knowing that this would not be a problem.
Well done Nick and Andrew on such a brilliant course and very well executed.
