Tip # 2: Getting Down to Business and Hitting the Gym

Let's say you're a basketball player looking to get some vertical advantage over your competitors and teammates. The first step to increasing your vertical jump is doing some serious weight training. Vertical Leaping depends on two major muscle groups - the calves and the quadriceps. For the Quads, the most effective exercises are leg presses (best done on an exercise machine to adequately support your back and control the lift), leg extensions, and for those without equipment, the classic wall sit: lean with your back against a wall and slowly lower yourself until your quadriceps are parallel to the floor. Start out with 30 seconds at a time or until you feel the burn, and gradually increase it until you can stay in that position for two minutes. You can also add weights to your lap to make it tougher. For the calves, toe raises are very effective; again, you can add weights to increase the burn.

Tip # 3: Measure Up - Benchmark Your Vertical Jump

Before you can improve, you need to know where you are starting from. You can benchmark your vertical jump by standing against a wall flat footed with your hand outstretched on the wall, and marking the wall where the tip of you hand is. Then perform a standing jump and mark the wall at the highest point of your jump. The distance between the two marks on the wall is your vertical jump, and your starting point. As you train and practice, you can repeat this exercise and see your improvement.

Tip # 4: Practice makes Awesome - Jumping Drills

The key to increasing your vertical jump is simple: practice, practice, practice! here are three simple jumping drills which will train and coordinate your muscles. One easy drill is to practice jumping back and forth over a two foot high obstacle, for example a weights bench. It takes some getting used to. Your goal is to hop back and forth without stopping for 20 or 30 consecutive seconds. This drill also improves quickness.

Another drill is to hold a medicine ball against your chest and touch your knuckles to your chin while holding the ball. Crouch down low to the ground in a deep squat. In a fixed position, begin bouncing at the knees. Bounce with more force each time until you are coming off of the ground at your highest jump. After 30 reps, bring the ball over your head and repeat.

A third simple drill is done on the court. Jump up and tap the hoop rim with one or both hands 10 times. If you cannot yet touch the backboard or the rim, find a place along a wall that will enable you to touch it 10 times in a row. It will become more difficult to touch the blackboard on each jump, but keep trying and repeat 3 to 5 times, making sure to jump quickly and explosively.

An excellent addition to these drills is training while wearing jump soles (sold in all good sporting goods stores) which have been proven to be effective in increasing jump height.
