Making my Schwinn Traveler a modern 10 speed?
So I have classic Schwinn Traveler frame and it came with a Sugino 2 ring crankset (40T,52T). The guy i got it from threw in a rear wheel with a 5 gear cassette (14,17,19, 21,24T). I am trying to build my 1st road bike to do a few local and state tours on. I like that it has a sturdy frame but hate the other components. I am buying new components currently but am not sure what else I need to get. I have a Campy: 10spd ultra thin chain, Veloce 10spd Rear derailleur, Veloce Brake Calipers, and a Veloce Ergopower 10 Spd Shifters. What else do I need? I know I need a Campy cassette to fit the drive train, but do I get a 5 gear rear cassette? will that work with the shifters, or do I have to have a 10 gear rear cassette and a new crankset? I'm just not sure what else I need to make this bike run smooth. How many speed is are the shifters anyway? It feels like it can do 2 or 3 gears on the left and 9 or 10 gears on the right shifter.
So, you want to make your bike a 20 speed, right? That is 2 chainrings (up front) and 10 in the back.
I'm sorry to say that the Traveler will simply not do what you need. The spacing where the rear wheel goes is not wide enough (and you can't simply "bend" it out), and you'll need much more than what you have so far.
In order to make a 20 speed you'll need a proper rear hub (to fit the cassette) a 10 speed compatible crank, and a 10 speed compatible front derailleur. Since you already have Campy stuff you are pretty much committed to ALL Campy which is an expensive proposition.
You may also discover that the handlebars are too small in diameter to secure the shifters, the seat tube too small to hold the front derailleur, and that you'll need to rig the cable routing for successful operation. I can't recall whether the Traveler had a rear dropout that has a derailleur hanger on it but if it doesn't you may as well look for another frame.
I am also pretty sure that the Veloce brake calipers are short reach which means that you'll be stuck with (obsolete) 27" rims rather than 700C which means there is also the issue of building custom wheels.
Here's the bad news. For the cost of the new Veloce parts you have right now you could have purchased an entire bike with SRAM Rival or Shimano Ultegra, both of which outperform Veloce (in my opinion).
