About Shimano In 1961, a 3-speed bicycle hub displayed at the New York Toy Show was the catalyst for what would eventually become Shimano American Corporation. The popularity of 20-inch wheeled bikes with hi-rise handle bars fueled a demand for multi-speed hubs and Shimano was producing an affordable and reliable version that caught the attention of the industry. So much so, that by 1965, Yoshizo Shimano, the youngest son of the company founder in Japan, opened an office in New York to get quicker product feedback and to provide technical and warranty assistance to retailers selling bikes equipped with Shimano parts. Though Shimano American has grown from that first modest office staffed by only three people to a full distribution center with sales and marketing offices, the goals are the same: to ensure that Shimano always has a listening ear to provide feedback on relevant trends and needs of the North American market for both bicycle and fishing products and make those a reality for customers.

Clipless pedals are the most popular type of mountain bike pedal for cross country riding. If you are considering making the switch to clipless, you may have some of the following questions:

Will I get hurt more with clipless pedals?

I had this fear also. I was afraid of getting hurt because I would not be able to get my feet out of the pedals quickly enough. Because there is a short learning curve when first making the transition from platform pedals to clipless pedals, I did fall a couple of times at first. One fall was in the parking lot and one was when I pulled over to let a fellow rider pass. Both times, I simply forgot that I had my feet clipped in the pedals and I just didn't get my foot out in time before tipping over. It was embarrassing, but not life threatening in any way.

Overall, I got hurt way more with platform pedals than with clipless pedals. With platform pedals, my feet were always coming off the pedals and I would either wipe out or smack my shins on my pedals. I am not saying I don't wipe out anymore, but it's due to my abilities and not the pedals.

Will clipless pedals make me a better rider?

If you a casual mountain biker and tend to ride smooth hardpack with minimal climbing, clipless mountain bike pedals will not make much of a difference in your performance.

If you want to improve your mountain biking skills, including your ability to climb more quickly and clear technical obstacles, clipless is a great choice for you. If you are considering cross country mountain bike racing, clipless pedals are also a great choice.

Riding with your feet clipped in allows you to use more of your leg muscles and pedal in a circular motion which is more efficient than just using a downward motion when pedaling. This allows you to climb faster with less fatigue.

How can I quickly learn to use clipless pedals?

1. Set your pedals on the loosest setting.

2. Practice clipping and unclipping each foot while propping yourself up against a wall or sitting in a doorway.

3. Practice clipping in and out with each foot while riding in grass or another soft surface.

4. Anticipate situations where you will need to stop so that you can unclip your foot in time.

Bicycle Rims and Wheels,

The first bicycle wheels were from a horse drawn cart, made of wood with a metal band round the bicycle rim, very hard and very uncomfortable to ride. Then a man called Dunlop (Scottish) invented the pneumatic tire, this along with Macadam (another Scot) inventing the tar road surface made cycling a lot more comfortable.

The bicycle rim, like the bicycle frame hasn’t changed much in design, it does still round and always will be. From the first wooden rims the next were made of steel, then alloy and now if you can afford it, carbon. Of all bicycle parts the bicycle rim can make a big difference to how your bike handles. First the weight of your rim affects your sprinting and climbing as the weight will slow you down, for a long, flat effort the weight isn’t as important as when you get the wheels rolling the weight can help to keep them going. The shape of the rim can be important also, a flat rim is best for climbing as aerodynamics are not so important on a hill, a deep section, aero, rim will help you cut through the air, but in a cross wind could cause you handling problems.

Bicycle Rims Materials

The different materials used for rims are very important also, steel is heavy and if damaged can be difficult to pull back into shape, but because it’s so strong it is quite difficult to bend in the first place and steel is cheaper than all the other materials. Alloy is probably the most popular rim, it can be made in any shape and profile, flat or aero, but not too deep as it would then weigh too much, most deep section rims are of a alloy braking section nearest the tire which is then mounted to a carbon deep section for lightness and aerodynamics and a very beautiful looking bicycle rim. As with most things if money is no problem you can go for the best, this would be an all carbon rim, strong and very light, but there are a few problems with these rims, first they don’t brake so well in wet conditions and you must use special brake blocks for carbon and they can be expensive, also the rim has to be perfectly round and not have any bulges in the rim wall as this will make braking quite erratic, carbon is a difficult material to work with and must be well looked after.

Types Of Rim To Consider

There are also two types of rim to consider and this depends on which kind of tire you want to use, first there are tubular tires these are glued on to the bicycle rim, cost more and are difficult to repair after a puncture, but for racing they feel and ride wonderfully. Clincher tires have improved a lot recently and are nearly as good as tubular for performance and are easily repairable and more reasonably priced. Most manufacturers make all styles in both systems.

So which should I buy? Not an easy answer, as there is so much to choose from, years ago you went to your local bike shop, picked out which hubs, spokes and rims you wanted and he would build your wheels, but now most rim makers also manufacture their own wheel sets, Mavic, Shimano and Campanology are probably the best known, check out their web-sites for all their new goodies, there are other brands and if you go to your local cycle shop or look in the bike magazines you’ll find them. There is a lot to choose form, but they are all round.

Edco Sprint hub compatible lock ring tool?

I built up a set of wheels with Edco Sprint hubs.

However, upon trying to use my Park tool to tighten the lock ring on the SRAM 10-speed cassette (Shimano-compatible), I found that there was not enough clearance to insert the Park tool.

I have talked to the distributor who sold me the hubs, and he has conferred with the new owners of Edco. It seems that there is a proprietary tool out there for this hub. And the company doesn't have one and the distributor doesn't have one.

Does any of you afficionados out there have one of these or know where to get one?

Without the tool, I have a beautiful, light piece of art.

Yes, I agree that they are beautiful and light.

I had to make one of these beauties by annealing a Park remover, remachining the inside, and retempering the tool. Quite a hassle... next time I'll just make one out of tool steel.

Anyway, if you were to contact a European distributor you will probably find one. I understand the US distributor is not big on stocking tools.
