In this wheel selection guide we've covered the basics of the Fulcrum Wheels, which are mainly used for road use, whether for racing, time-trialling, uphill or sprint. Each main model is described and we've explained the price and specification order as you go down the range from the top performing wheels.
We've also detailed some of the technology used in the different Fulcrum wheel models. Generally as you might expect, the more you pay, the higher the specification and the more advanced the performance. This guide also explains how the wheelsets are named.
When buying, remember that you can get significant discounts on individual wheels as the shops often have deals running on particular models. Its not uncommon to see up to 30% off and that is a big saving when you might be spending the best part of £1000 !
First of all an explanation of the Technology. Here are the common terms that Fulcrum use to describe the technology they have incorporated into their wheels. Obviously, the amount of technology used depends on the price level of the wheel.
2:1 means spokes are doubled in critical stress areas. Max. compatibility means the wheel works with other manufacturers systems. Dynamic balancing means using extra weight to improve balance. MoMag refers to the clever use of alloys and fixings to allow better spoke tensioning. Ultra Fit is a Fulcrum development in the design of the tyre/rim interface. 2-way fit allows the use of tubeless tyres. C.U.L.T. refers to the use of special ceramic bearings and metals in the hub.
Now the Fulcrum Wheel range: The Racing Light and the Racing Speed are the two top wheels with the maximum reduction in weight, top rigidity and aerodynamics. After these, the specification decreases as the model number rises.
The Fulcrum Racing Zero shows a small weight increase to 1425g for a wheelset, using extruded rims and variable section aero spokes.
Next comes the Fulcrum Racing 1 which is slightly heavier but in the serious road racing category with triple milled rims, special aero spokes and a combination of Fulcrum wheel technology, including 2-way and Ultra Fit for tubeless tyre use.
At a reduced cost you can then still get the benefits of some pretty advanced technology with the Fulcrum Racing 3 at 1605g with special machining, no rim drilling, adjustable bearings and aero spokes, increased slightly in number compared to the higher models.
At the entry level for road use and racing are the Fulcrum Racing 5, at 1755g and the Racing 7 at a weight of 1858g.
The top Fulcrum Racing wheels are worth a special mention. These are both wheels for sprint and/or uphill use, where maximum acceleration and responsiveness is required.
These two top models, the Fulcrum Racing Light and the Racing Speed, both use CULT technology to reduce wheel bearing friction while increasing longevity and wear-free use. The Fulcrum Racing Light weighs in at just 1280g and the Racing Speed uses a 50mm aero rim profile.
There are also incorporated all the top technological advances in cycle wheel research, including changes in spoke placement to give rapid response to drive effort from the cyclist. At this level you need every effort to be transmitted efficiently and this is what Fulcrum have developed into their wheel design.

Parts of your bike – What are you riding?
Everybody knows it. You need a new bike and you go to the biggest bicycle shop in your town. There are so many bikes that are really cool but which one will fulfil your needs? You ask the nice guy behind the counter. Well, he shows you several bikes. The expensive mountain bike for the more professional rider, the light racing cycle for competition, the more common road bike, the electric bike for lazy rider and a few mountain bikes in special offer. But which parts make the real difference in quality and in pricing?
- Let's start with the most important component of a bike, the frame. This is the hearth of every bike. No matter if it's a full suspension mountain bike, a racing cycle or a cheap road bike. No frame, no bike. Simple. Of course the frame is the most expensive part of your bike and there are so many different types. They differ in weight, size, optic, style, material, price, … and so on. At this point you should make your decision what type of bike you would like to ride in the near future.
- The second bike component is the shifting system. They also differ in several things but this depends on your riding style. The shifting system of a racing cycle will be really different in comparison to the shifting system of a mountain bike.
- Another important parts are the two wheels. Could you imagine to ride a bike on or off road without wheels? Me neither! The two wheels are called the wheelset. This wheelset consists of the axle, the hub, the spokes and the rims. You need a special wheelset for nearly every type of riding.
- Not a very important part but more a comfortable part is the fork. Well for most bikes and riding types the fork is very important and must be very special but what it does is to absorb the road holes to make your ride comfortable.
- Safety first? Of course. Your bike needs a braking system. The two big ones are the disc brakes and the rim brakes known as V-brakes. There are also some differences in weight, field of application, performance and price.
As you can see it all starts with your decision what type of riding you prefer. Once you experience the type that suits you best you can choose some exclusive parts for your bike.

Best place to buy velocity deep v wheelset online?
There are ten-gagillion places it seems. What is my best bet? Also, if it matters, its for a track bike (shocking) and I'm after a specific color combination with just the front rim machined.
Also, anything I might need to know or consider? Its for a bianchi pista (55cm) that I use as a commuter, 10 mi a day on flat, crappy roads. Is there any benefit to buying them at a local (sf-area) shop?
Here are a few places you can buy online, like you said ten-gazillion places I'd just find the one with the best price. the first is for a track bike.
